It began with a
Question.
Could coffee grown in Nepal become something more than a crop? Could it build a business, support farming communities and change the way people experienced coffee?
United by Passion.
Grew with Care.
For two MBA graduates, those questions became the heart of a business development project. They studied where coffee could grow, how it could be produced and who might enjoy it. When graduation ended, they decided to take the idea beyond the classroom.
Kathmandu Coffee’s first workspace was a servant’s quarters at one of the founders’ homes. The operation was small, but the ambition was clear: to give Nepali coffee the care, attention and opportunity it deserved.
In 2008, the founders bought land in Nuwakot and began planting what would become known simply as the Farm. Coffee trees take time to mature. While they waited three to four years for the first meaningful harvest, the business kept moving.
They worked with smallholder farmers and cooperatives, building relationships with people who were already growing coffee across Nepal. Those partnerships became part of Kathmandu Coffee’s foundation. As the Farm grew, so did a wider community connected by a belief in the potential of Nepali coffee.
Over the years, that small beginning grew into a business that cultivates, sources, processes, roasts and shares coffee across the country. Along the way, it has created work and opportunities for hundreds of people—from farming families to the teams who bring each bag and cup to life.

Experience Coffee.
Today, you can find Kathmandu Coffee in hotels, restaurants, cafés, offices and homes across Nepal. But reaching more people has always meant more than putting coffee in more places. It has meant inviting people to discover what Nepali coffee can be.
Coffee does not have to be a thick, black, bitter drink. It can be bright or mellow, familiar or surprising. It can be a quiet morning ritual, a conversation with a friend or someone’s first taste of coffee grown close to home.
What began as a graduation project continues to grow with every farmer, roaster, barista and coffee lover who becomes part of the story. From a small room to the Farm, and from the Farm to cups across Nepal, our purpose remains the same: to help people discover the richness of Nepali coffee.
18 Years of Katmandu Coffee
Since 2008, Katmandu Coffee has championed Nepal’s specialty coffee craft from the ground up. From cultivating high-altitude Arabica at our Alpine estate — affectionately known as The Farm — in Nuwakot and partnering with smallholder farmers across Nepal to building Nepal’s pioneer ISO 22000 and DFTQC certified roastery, we have spent 18 years dedicated to unyielding quality, origin traceability, and excellence from soil to cup.
Educating A Nation in How to Drink Coffee
Great coffee is knowledge shaped by art. We share the craft so everyone in Nepal can explore new flavors and brew their own perfect cup.
The Barista School
Our specialized Barista School equips aspiring coffee artisans with internationally-benchmarked skills: espresso theory, sensory evaluation, milk thermodynamics, latte art, and machine care.
Public Cupping & Tasting
We host community cupping sessions and tasting workshops, teaching people to recognize origin notes — acidity vs. bitterness, floral aroma, body, and the magic of high-altitude sweetness.
Farmer Knowledge Projects
We collaborate closely with smallholder mountain farmers, providing agricultural workshops on selective cherry harvesting, pruning, organic soil nourishment, and optimal processing methods.
Events & Brewing Popups
From youth festivals to corporate wellness seminars, we conduct hands-on manual brewing demos (V60, French Press, Aeropress) to help everyday people brew cafe-grade coffee at home.
All About Coffee
Understanding the bean, the botanical wonder, and why it captivates millions around the globe.
What is Coffee?
A Fruit, Not a Bean
Coffee does not begin in a burlap sack; it begins as a vibrant, sweet cherry growing on an evergreen shrub. What we call the "coffee bean" is actually the seed nestled within.
High-Altitude Himalayan Terroir
Grown at altitudes between 1,100 and 1,600 meters, cool mountain nights slow down the cherries' maturation cycle. This extended ripening period concentrates natural sugars, producing nuanced acidity and aromatic complexity.
The Alchemy of Roasting
Green beans possess over 800 aromatic compounds that remain dormant until roasting. Controlled thermal profiling caramelizes sugars and develops silky chocolates, florals, and vibrant citrus notes.
Why Coffee?
A Ritual of Human Connection
Coffee is the world's greatest social catalyst. It turns strangers into friends, fuels deep morning conversations, and provides a sacred mindful pause in a chaotic world.
Mind & Vitality
Naturally packed with antioxidants and chlorogenic acids, a fresh cup of pure specialty Arabica sharpens mental clarity, stimulates creativity, and elevates physical alertness without artificial additives.
